Shock 50 percent tariffs on U.S. imports of certain Canadian goods took effect early Saturday after Canada suspended bilateral trade negotiations Friday evening.

Hours earlier, en route to a rally in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, President Trump told reporters, “The deal with Canada is moving along, and we should be able to have a deal with Canada.”

That deal may yet arrive, but the countries did not reach an agreement before the tariffs took effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday.

Affected are imports ranging from wine, cement, and hockey sticks to certain automobiles and dairy products. The levies apply even if the covered goods qualify for preferential treatment under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, a trilateral trade pact negotiated during Mr. Trump’s first term.

“Tonight, Canada declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier this week. Despite the U.S. offer to Canada to receive the best treatment of any major exporter to our market, new demands and walk backs of other commitments by Canada have upended the careful balance reached in the past days,” U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said. “In addition, Canada is continuing to maintain its prolonged retaliation against the United States, including, among other things, flat-out prohibitions on certain American goods and services.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the recent “progress has not been enough to meet our objectives for Canadians. As a result, this evening, I have decided to suspend trade negotiations with the U.S. and have directed Canada’s negotiators to return to Ottawa.”

He added, “The U.S. intends to impose a 50 percent tariff on roughly $28 billion of Canadian goods. Canada will match those tariffs dollar for dollar to protect our workers and businesses.”

Mr. Carney blamed “last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms,” which he called “unfair” and “uneconomic.”

Mr. Greer said, “This week, the United States agreed to provide even better treatment to Canada, offering significant tariff reductions on steel, aluminum, autos, and lumber. The U.S. offer was also forward looking, and included a historic economic and national security partnership to cooperate on export controls, combat transshipment, enhance digital trade, and align certain external tariffs.”

He called the failure “a missed opportunity for Canada to partner with the United States, which is the fastest growing economy in the G7.”

Neither Mr. Trump nor the White House had commented on the deal’s collapse as of early Saturday morning. Dominic LeBlanc, the minister responsible for Canada-U.S. trade, also did not immediately issue a statement.

Some other Canadian politicians were quick to jump on the news, however.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said, “The prime minister has my full support for a strong response — tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar. As we fight to protect Canadian sovereignty and economic security, everything needs to be on the table. Ontario is ready to do its part.”

But Jamil Jivani, a former special adviser to Mr. Ford who represents the Bowmanville-Oshawa North district in Parliament, ripped the outcome. “Make no mistake. Since the beginning, in their public communications, Liberal politicians like Mark Carney and Doug Ford have put their political self-interests ahead of Canadian workers,” said Mr. Jivani, an Ontario Conservative. “As leaders, I believe it’s incumbent on us to be servants for the people who elected us, and the families who are relying on us to bring home the dignity that comes with a paycheck.”

DETROIT — Mike Rogers’ Senate campaign held a press conference Thursday in a most unlikely location: the front lawn of a home on Detroit’s west side.

Motor City is not known for a strong Republican base, but that was the gathering’s point: to show Mr. Rogers has crossover appeal and is a safe harbor for Democrats uncomfortable with his opponent, progressive Abdul El-Sayed.

Democratic state Representative Karen Whitsett said the press conference was held on her mother-in-law’s front lawn. The politician has mostly walked away from the Democrats in Lansing during this term. She took things a step further Thursday by backing Mr. Rogers.

Mrs. Whitsett said health insurance is her big issue in 2026, and Mr. El-Sayed’s preference for Medicare for All — a single-payer system in which the U.S. government is the payer — would leave her worse off.

“Now I’m not standing here as a state representative. I’m not standing here as a Democrat or a Republican because I’m neither. My bottom line is I want people to start to understand you need to pick your candidates by your issues,” she declared. “They have to line up, and I’m only going to talk about one issue that’s important to me, and that is health insurance.”

“I do not want to lose my Blue Cross Blue Shield. My husband is an operating engineer, and I want my health insurance,” she continued. “You will lose your health insurance if the other candidate gets elected. There’s no ifs, ands, or buts about it. That is what Medicare for all means.”

Rabbi Asher Lopatin is a lifelong Democrat from Huntington Woods, a wealthy suburb of Detroit. “I usually vote Democrat, but I’m going to be voting for Mike Rogers,” he said. “Abdul El-Sayed has made one thing very clear: We cannot let him anywhere near the Senate.”

Mr. Lopatin noted the strong ties between Mr. El-Sayed and his top surrogate, online streamer Hasan Piker, who has said, “America deserved 9/11.”

“He’s never disavowed Hasan’s antisemitism. This man who’s called Orthodox Jews like me inbred. When Abdul El-Sayed was asked about the terrorist who attempted to blow up a synagogue right here in Michigan with hundreds of children,” he noted, “all he said is that hurt people hurt people.”

Mr. Lopatin said Mr. El-Sayed’s words and associations render him “unfit to lead.”

But he didn’t say he is leaving the Democratic Party. Mr. Rogers has made a point of not asking Democrats to do that — just to walk away from Mr. El-Sayed.

The Washington Star asked why Mr. Lopatin wouldn’t just leave the Democrat Party as a whole, given that it has never distanced itself from Mr. El-Sayed. If anything, the party has rallied around him, from Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson to the foes Mr. El-Sayed beat in the primary, Congresswoman Haley Stevens and state Senator Mallory McMorrow, to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who said Thursday, “Dr. El-Sayed has brought in new energy and new talent into the Democratic Party.” (And the Michigan candidate promised to oppose Mr. Schumer’s leadership should he get into the body.)

“That insensitivity, the fact that they have not spoken out against that is very disappointing,” Mr. Lopatin said. “And that, yes, that does make me vote. In addition to the amazing qualities that Mike Rogers has, it makes me vote for Mike Rogers and turn everyone to that. Very disappointing of the Democratic Party.”

Mr. El-Sayed has had a tough few weeks since beating Ms. Stevens in the primary. First, the victory over the moderate was much tighter than the progressive and his team had crowed it would be. While supporters spoke of a 10-to-15-point triumph, he won by just 1 point and a margin of fewer than 15,000 votes.

Then Republicans immediately dropped the oppo on Mr. El-Sayed that Ms. Stevens either did not have or did not use. There were stories about his disdain for football, fireworks, and Mackinac Island.

“This election is about finding those things that we agree upon, not what we’re going to fight about,” said Kristi Rogers, Mike’s wife, to kick off the presser.

“You may be thinking, ‘Is this the time I set aside my party label? Is this the time that we have to actually look at what’s right for our family, what’s right for the state of Michigan?’” Mrs. Rogers said. “And I say to you: Yeah, it is.”

“Our door is open,” Mr. Rogers said. “I’m going to work to earn your trust, earn your support, to earn your vote. As a senator, I’ll fight for you if you’re a Republican, a Democrat, an independent, or none of the above. This is our home. We all have a stake in its future. And why we stood here together is we know we have a state to save. Michigan, let’s get to work.”

President Trump, who has never lost his roots as a builder of landmark structures, can for now continue construction of the White House ballroom, the Supreme Court said Friday.

Chief Justice John Roberts in a single-sentence order stayed a lower-court ruling halting the project “pending further order of the undersigned or of the Court.”

Mr. Trump announced the project July 31, 2025, and demolition of the East Wing began in October. The ballroom is estimated to cost $400 million, which the administration says will be financed through private donations. Last week, Solicitor General John Sauer told the Supreme Court the project is 65 percent complete.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a congressionally chartered nonprofit, sued in December after the East Wing structure was demolished, arguing only Congress has the power to approve such a project. Although its request for emergency relief to halt construction was initially rejected, U.S. District Judge Richard Leon granted a preliminary injunction March 31.

That injunction — affirmed August 7 by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, with a two-week stay to allow for appeals — permitted below-ground construction work but halted anything related to the size and scale of the above-ground ballroom.

Mr. Trump and his attorneys contend the facility will not only house a much-needed public-functions space — state dinners are often held outside in tents — but provide various security features needed in a time of increased attacks on U.S. leaders and evolving technology such as drones.

Law professor, attorney, and broadcaster Hugh Hewitt, writing on social media before Mr. Roberts issued the stay, said the project must continue: “[T]he completion of the East Wing is an urgent matter of national security involving the protection of this and future presidents, their families and staffs and the necessary command-and-control centers and medical facilities at the White House, as well as the defenses at the White House of the White House and its adjacent grounds.”

Mr. Hewitt earlier referred to “TDS” (“Trump Derangement Syndrome”) and called the litigation a “circus” the Supreme Court should quickly end. “Imagine the consequences of a state sponsor of successfully terror targeting the White House if necessary defenses that would have deflected the attack are not in place,” he wrote.

The White House has not yet commented on Mr. Roberts’ order, though Mr. Trump posted an article about the news to his Truth Social account.

The Trump administration is preparing what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called Thursday the “toughest sanctions in history” against Iran and warning countries that continue supporting Tehran will face severe economic penalties.

President Trump announced the coming campaign Wednesday, promising “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale” against Iran.

“ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences. Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies — It all needs to stop NOW. You know who you are. This will be an ECONOMIC D-DAY, and we need all of our Allies to stand with the United States of America to isolate, and defeat, the Iran threat. These maniacs are on the ropes, and these HISTORIC MEASURES will cripple them and their ability to project terror worldwide.” he wrote on Truth Social.

The announcement came on the anniversary of the August 19, 1953, U.S.- and British-backed clerical coup that ousted Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh, a fact Iran’s foreign ministry noted in a statement denouncing Mr. Trump’s remarks: “This action is not only another indication of the continuation of 73 years of hostility and animosity by U.S. policymakers toward the Iranian people but also further demonstrates the anti-human, lawless, and hegemonic nature of the U.S. ruling establishment.”

Mr. Bessent said Thursday the administration will provide more details at a Monday press conference. He described the effort as working in tandem with the U.S. naval blockade imposed on Iran in April and paused for a month beginning in mid-June.

“It is a one-two punch. We have the blockade, and we are going to have the toughest sanctions in history,” Mr. Bessent told CNBC. “This is going to be the greatest coordinated economic isolation in the history of the world. And we are going to them and saying you are either with us or against us,” he said of the message to American allies.

Mr. Bessent also said the economic campaign could reduce the likelihood of another major military escalation: “If we are doing the maximum economic pressure, then that means that likely there will not be a large-scale kinetic restart.”

Vice President JD Vance said the nearly six-month conflict has changed. “We’re kind of now in a new phase where the most effective tool that we have is the economic pressure that we can apply to them,” he told “The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show.” “Do they want to have their economy strangled for the rest of time or do they want to have a better relationship with the West?”

“This is a delicate dance because we apply economic pressure to them, they’re going to try to apply economic pressure to us, but what has been true over the last couple of weeks is they felt a lot more pressure than we have,” Mr. Vance said.

China presents one of the biggest tests for the administration’s strategy. More than 80 percent of Iran’s shipped oil goes to China, based on 2025 data from analytics firm Kpler.

Asked whether Washington could target China for continuing business with Iran, Mr. Bessent said some discussions were better conducted privately. He nevertheless urged Beijing “to get with the program.”

China bought an average of 1.38 million barrels of Iranian oil per day in 2025, per Kpler. Chinese refiners have developed trading and payment systems designed to limit exposure to U.S. sanctions.

Other countries also maintain substantial economic relationships with Tehran.

Turkey’s bilateral trade with Iran runs about $5 billion to $6 billion annually, while Iraq’s trade with Iran exceeded $10 billion in 2025, according to official Iraqi trade figures. Iraqi energy officials said Iraq also pays Iran about $4 billion to $5 billion annually for natural gas.

The United Arab Emirates, historically one of Iran’s largest trading partners, this week suspended all financial and economic transactions with Iran until further notice.

Mr. Trump did not specify what countries or businesses maintaining ties with Iran will face. Mr. Bessent’s promised Monday announcement could clarify what penalties Washington intends to impose and how broadly it intends to apply them.
